Mai Davies the award winner with fellow Yarra Leisure staff at the ARV awards

We're proud to announce that our lifeguard Mai Davies was awarded the Pool Lifeguard Award on Friday 14 June at the ARV Industry Awards Gala. This is the second year in a row a Yarra Leisure lifeguard has won the award which is exceptional for our team.

The ARV Industry Awards recognise and reward outstanding achievement and commitment to the industry. The Pool Lifeguard Award recognises excellence and commitment to lifeguarding including; customer service, knowledge and skills relating to lifeguarding, interpersonal and leadership skills, commitment to safety and overall contribution to the facility. Mai rightfully won the award for displaying all the lifeguard attributes, skills and work ethic that set her apart from the rest.

Mai started as a lifeguard with us in October 2017 and quickly became a go-to lifeguard for many Duty Managers, and a known leader amongst the team with her calm and professional demeanor. Early in 2018 Mai got involved in our Women Making Waves (WMW) program and continues to work as both a lifeguard and Specialist Duty Manager in the program and encourages other female staff to get involved. She has helped make this a fun and interactive shift by her engaging nature. In July 2018, Mai was nominated to compete in our winning team at the Annual Lifeguard Challenge, in October 2018 she was awarded staff member of the month, and in the summer of 2018/19 Mai stepped up to the role of Duty Manager.

Her achievements only highlight what we already know, that she is supremely competent, a great team player, incredibly reliable, vigilant and attentive and is someone who sets a very high personal standard in everything she does and her actions lead the team to a higher level. She is a true asset to our team and and is a very deserving winner of this award.

This award not only highlights the exemplary work undertaken by Mai here at Yarra, but the overall quality and standards of our entire lifeguarding crew. It certainly doesn't go unnoticed by their colleagues and pool users.

We are also proud to acknowledge our other ARV award nominees and their valuable contributions to our team:

  • Jayden Bannister (Swim Teach of the Year)
  • Robyn Gosbell (Infant and Pre-schooler Swim Teach of the Year)
