Burnley Women's Golf Club and Burnley Golf Club win premiership
Monday 08 July 2019
Burnley Golf Club and Burnley Women’s Golf Club have achieved greatness this Victorian Golf League Pennant season with the clubs dominating their respective grades.
The men's finals were played on Sunday 19 May at the Werribee Park Golf Course with team, caddies and supporters departing Burnley Golf Course in the team bus at 6am. The Scratch team were the first out to play. Burnley Golf Club Secretary Greg Taylor said “After 13 holes the handicap team looked to be in trouble with only two of eight matches ahead. Perhaps buoyed by the news of the Scratch teams win or just pure determination the Handicap team dug deep with some great turn arounds. With just one match still in play they got back to a tied situation, with the result being decided on the 18th hole coming down to the last putt of the day which we were able secure. As you can image it was a very happy bus ride back to the Burnley Golf Course.”
The teams will now both move up a division into the 2020 season with the Scratch team in particular now competing in Division 1.
The Women’s Burnley Golf Club had great success themselves, claiming victory in both their respective divisions in the Victorian Golf League 2019 Pennant season. They had teams competing in both Division 4 and Division 8 sections with dominant performances from both sides over the stretch of the 8 home and away game season and final series at Werribee Park Golf Course which is a very demanding championship course.
Division 4, Burnley 1 defeated Nepean Women's Golf Course, and Division 8, Burnley 2 defeated Riverview Ladies Golf Club.
Women’s Club Secretary Robyn Fletcher said “The wins have certainly sharpened the competition and electrified the wonderful spirit of the club”. For many clubs winning a pennant flag is merely a dream, however the respective clubs at Burnley Golf Course have achieved the highest level of achievement, so a huge congratulations to all involved on such a profound achievement!
